![]() Don't clip the converters coming in or going out. Everybody's all tweaked out and paranoid and confused. There are so many threads about meters out here. Relative volume - how it sounds when it's all mixed together - is really all the matters. The debate over "proper gain staging" inside a floating point DAW goes on for years, but in the end levels as shown on meters really are arbitrary. We're going to add EQ and compression and whatnot anyway, and there are so many places along the way that we can compensate our levels that it really doesn't matter. Yes, it's nice when you're done tracking and can just set all your faders at unity and have a good working mix, but this often just isn't practical. If the converter clips, though, the take is ruined. If the external gear hits its limit before you reach 0dbfs, you'll hear it and correct it. Thanks, Don.The colors for the item areas can be changed in the Theme Tweaker. I like the Solaris Blue but the item areas are dark and if I Split an Item it's hard to see the splits. To put it another way - the real effect of levels that are "too low" is minimal compared to the distortion you get from being too loud. I'm looking for a good theme that has horizontal VU Meters. If you're using the preamp built into your interface, you can try to see if adding gain improves S/N, but quite often it's really not a big enough difference to bother with. If you've got an analog signal chain before the converters, you turn those knobs till it sounds good and then make sure you're not clipping in Reaper. I am trying to get a vintage style VU meter. With relatively decent modern gear, when we're setting input levels, all that really matters is peaks, and Reapers track meters do that just fine. ![]()
